Something else to scoop up: Miss Kara bracelets!

Just last week I posted about my love friendship bracelets and how cool and easy layering bracelets of all shapes and sizes is! Another great brand, Miss Kara, has been brought to my attention by a fellow blogger. She told me about the site SHOPMISSKARA.COM and I checked it out and loved it! They are simple and natural designs that will blend nicely into any assortment :)
Look for little buddhas and skulls (I love skulls) as well as wood beads and natural stones! So cute and easy for summer!! Here's my favorite one:

Talk Trends: The Blues.. Denim that is!

Denim has made a major come back this spring! Chambray (lightweight cotton in light blue hues) and denim are splashing on the scene, and there are a number of ways to wear them.
WORK SHIRTS and button downs in blue hues can be paired with white jeans, khakis, and even dark denim! Chambray and denim DRESSES and OVER-ALLS are easy pieces to wear all by themselves, no work necessary! Ripped and distressed JEANS are favorites too- pair them with a boyfriend cardigan, girly silk top, or relaxed tee. The biggest come back though is the JEAN JACKET, a 90's favorite and classic piece all around- put it over a day dress or to dress down the rest of your closet. Also, denim and chambray is making its way into accessories: purses, shoes, you name it!
Light denim has definitely made its come back, girls and guys! We're seeing it everywhere from Forever 21 to Lanvin and Chanel! Perfect easy pieces for spring and summer, get some chambray while it's still around :)
here are some favorite looks from polyvore.com!

Spring Weekend follow up..... EPIC.

Ahhhhh!! Best Spring Weekend by FAR. Kudos, Fordham! MGMT was sooo tight, my best friend from home and I were squeezing ourselves into the front rows as soon as they came on and "Electric Feel" started playing.. I was raging when my other favorite song "Time to Pretend" came on-- such a great live version hearing some fantastic lyrics:

"I'm feeling rough
I'm feeling raw
I'm in the prime of my life...

This is our decision
To live fast and die young
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.
Yea it's overwhelming
But what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning news...
We're fated to pretend"

.....basically the lyrics that are LITERALLY describing my life right now!!!
While waiting for MGMT to come on, I was busy waiting in line for ice cream and meeting up with friends who were equally as excited as I was for the festivities to begin. There were other events like a Flava performance and DJ Earworm concert, but MGMT was really the only thing I wanted to see-- and I did just that!! Sooo much fun and so happy that my last Spring Weekend as a Fordham student was worthwhile!
Look at my pics!!

SPRING WEEKEND + MGMT = Fordham Craziness!

So Fordham has an annual tradition of SPRING WEEKEND, a jam packed weekend containing all the live music, Mr. Softee, and fun college stuff that we are normally deprived of during the rest of the year. And let me tell you, Fordham students get every last drop of fun out of Spring Weekend. And each year it seems to get better! Performances from Ghost Face Killa to Yellow Card have graced the CAB Spring Weekend stage the past few years, and this year it is none other than [everyone's favorite] MGMT. I DIE.
I have loved MGMT since I heard of them almost 3 years ago... the greatest feel good dance music ever. Their single "Electric Feel" I think they had everyone at hello, and the craziest music video too-- think nymphs in the jungle. Amazing.
MGMT also just released their new CD, "Congratulations" that at first listen is a little more tame than their first CD "Oracle Spectacular" but I'm sure is equally as good!! Their singles "Kids" and "Time to Pretend" are faaantastic as well!
That is why everyone is SOO EXCITED for MGMT to hit the stage (hopefully Dean Rodgers doesn't have a heart attack due to all the craziness that will ensue). Be on the look out for lots of neon, bathing suits, and fanny packs, that's my forecast at least :)
SO everyone, ENJOY SPRING WEEKEND 2010 and MGMT!! Here's a preview of the amazingness we're about to experience, their beloved single, "Electric Feel" !!! uhhhh-mazing!

Talk Trends: Friendship Bracelets, yay!

Do you love your friends? I sure do! That's why FRIENDSHIP bracelets are super in this season! The favorite childhood accessory is back! They are so fun and easy to wear and wearing them is like carrying happy thoughts of them with you on your wrist :) There are so many cool and eclectic places to acquire them too. This weekend a friend of mine is coming to town and I'm sure we will be scouring the streets of New York to find some new ones!
I love neon brads with charms, evil eyes, anything sparkling, and mixing metals like silver and gold. There really is NO right or wrong way to wear them. Layer them on-- it seems that more is better this season! Plus they look so great with any outfit because they are colorful and sparkly! Yay! What's coolest about them is that you can find them from anywhere from $1 on the street or at flea markets or a little more pricey (usually for more glitz) and cute boutiques throughout the city!
Here are some of my favorites from the ETTIKA boutique-- shop their website, they have the most amazing designs!!

...now don't you want to go get some?!

Something new.... TIESTO

A friend of mine told me about how she had recently gotten into techno and dance music... and I laughed. Laughed very hard in fact, until she had me listen to what she had been listening to. She explained how she had gone to a dance party the previous weekend in Seattle called "Tiesto," named after the famous world renowned DJ who travels around the country putting on these laser and music shows..
They are PHENOMENAL. Hundreds of colored lasers shoot across the sky while the most electrifying music plays from this little man Tiesto way above the crowd. He does his own music as well as some of the coolest remixes. She said there was so much energy in the room it was amazing! Sooo after that I had to give some of the songs a listen. I didn't like them all, but I liked a lot of them! Super feel good music, upbeat with fun lyrics, definitely something new and worthwhile and perfect for those summer parties.
Check out his artist profile on PANDORA here
And listen to one his most popular songs, "Escape Me" featuring CC Sheffield here:

ALICIA?! Video, Please!

OK, so many, many weeks ago I posted about the highly anticipated Alicia Keys and Beyonce duet "Put It In a Love Song" premiere video which was supposed to be released in MARCH. Not only did I check back several times in March and April, but as we near the end of the month there is still NO word on when the video will be released.
The music video was supposed to premiere mid-March on BET and has been postponed without further notice since then. Not only is the song struggling on the charts because of the lack of video, but other video collabs like Lady Gaga and Beyonce's Telephone have been sky rocketing on the charts because everyone loves the video.
All I can search for are "behind the scenes" and "the making of..." videos! ALICIA, we want to see your new video, please!!! In the meantime, at least check out what we're in for...

[It's an OGRE!] Nail Polish from OPI

Who knew that Shrek was that big of a deal that OPI would want to go and make limited edition SHREK nail polish... but they did! This is just a small limited edition of just 6 colors, but they are sooo fun why not get them all! Chose from "Rumple's Wiggin"- a pretty lavender, What's With the Cattitude?"- a pale blue, "Fiercely Fiona" a light golden hue, "Ogre the Top" bold turquoise, "Funky Dunkey" - (my favorite) a great purple color, or "Who the Shrek Are You?"- the signature Shrek green. All are fairly bright really nicely saturated colors- perfect for the spring and summer neon looks that are so in season!! Order at Amazon.com or most beauty retailers near you!

Talk Trends: Patterns, "shake em up, shake em up!"

I am usually a pretty conservative girl when it comes to patterns.. if I'm wearing a busy print I try to tame it down with simple accessories and a great pair of shoes.. until this season when mixing patterns has become the "IT" thing to do! Mixing animal prints, tribal prints, graphic prints, along with bright bold colors, is the new way to do it! I've seen a ton of spreads in various magazines such as Marie Claire, Elle, and Vogue, all of them are really embracing the new trend!
I love mixing animal prints with bright colors, and using finishing touches like a braided wedge to complete tribal pieces. Animal print (as I've noted before in other "Talk Trends" posts) is going to be THE finishing touch this summer and into fall. Be careful not to get too cray with the mixing and matching-- avoid colors that might clash too much and mixing too many busy prints together. But other than that, have fun and go wild!!

That's my take on how to mix patterns and prints this season, courtesy of polyvore.com!

TOMS Shoes: slippers or life savers?

I first started seeing TOMS Shoes about 2 years ago in smaller upscale shoes stores, like Tani on the upper west side. At first I thought they looked a little funny and didn't know why a pair of [basically] slippers were so expensive. Yea, they were cute little slip-ons for spring and summer, but man at $50-$70 a pop they really thought they were special. Then I realized what TOMS mission statement is: for every pair that we as consumers by, TOMS donates the same pair of shoes to children in developing countries and I was like "awwww ok". That changed my view on these shoes quite a bit.

But recently, amidst natural disasters occurring left and right and poverty still being combated, I'm wondering if TOMS is really living up to the wonderful philanthropic company its been labeled as. A friend pointed out a lot of these problems to me. First of all, the shoes are made outside the U.S. in Argentina, Ethiopia, and China- probably saving a bunch of money in labor and production costs. Second of all, if the shoes are being made for a tiny portion of the price the shoes retail for (around 15 cents compared to on average $60 for retail) it seems that TOMS could afford to donate more than just ONE pair of shoes per child-- why not 2? Yes it is great that retail and philanthropy have joined forces to help others, but are the two forces living up to their full potential? I don't really think so.

But that was just my small rant on the matter. If you want to buy the shoes because they are cute in a kind of relaxed hippy sort of way (a lot of TOMS shoes are "vegan") and because they come in a variety of prints, colors, and glitter assortments, then by all means, indulge. BUT, if you are buying them as a means of philanthropic contribution on your part, maybe think again if there is a better, more effective way, to help people in other countries. That is all :)

Last but not least, if you want to shop the website and learn more about the company click here for TOMS website!

Spa Week.... Continues!

So going on right now is SPA WEEK, a nation wide celebration of spa-going with its biggest perk being majorly DISCOUNTED spa services! The party started April 12th and many spa's are booking up with anticipation BUT many salons also will be carrying over Spa Week discounted services until next week (they love the attention). Choose from massages, acupuncture, peels, mani/pedis, facials, waxing, reflexology, botox- literally so many great things to chose from! Everything is supposed to be around $50 but there is a little discretion with things like electrolysis and botox. And it's going on in almost every major city nation wide!! New York loves spa week and there are a TON of your favorite salons and spa's participating!

I treated myself to a facial from the Dorit Baxter Salon and Spa on 57th St. this week in honor of Spa Week and scored it for $50, such a great deal, AND she even threw in an extra treatment during my facial! It was sooo relaxing and after the harsh winter and lack of sunlight my skin really needed one! I walked out with clean fresh skin and after paying half the price!! Such an amazing experience that I've booked another spa treatment for this coming week since the spa had extended their Spa Week prices. So indulgent, so cheap!

Register on spaweek.com and then search either by your favorite spa, spa service, or participating New York area spa's and salons! There's another week of deals to be had!

Talk Trends: Metallic

Not that this is a new trend, but it sure is a favorite! Metallic hit the fashion scene hard about three years ago when people found how easy they were to wear and how easily they spice up any outfit. Every summer I usually purchase a new pair of metallic sandals that I usually wear through in three months- they go with any and everything. But this summer, there's a new comer-- rose gold metallic. This pinkish gold hue warms up every skin tone and goes with all the yellows, oranges, reds, and whites especially that are always in during the spring and summer months.
As always, its super easy to incorporate trends into accessories and shoes. Like I said, a great pair of metallic sandals will take you SO far. Bangles and layered necklaces are always a smart move. And handbags and clutches especially are easy and fun to take with you anywhere.
Here is my collage that I made at Polyvore.com (new favorite site that's such a handy blogging tool) of all my favorite metallic goodies for this summer season!

Tribeca Film Festival!

So I saw my first flyer for the Tribeca Film Festival today, which is one of New York's most coveted arts festivals. The annual event brings documentarians, small and feature length film makers together in a fun filled multi day party! The festival goes on from April 21st to May 2nd! It takes place mostly throughout the Tribeca neighborhood on the lower east side but has extended into various venues like the World Financial Center and in to Chelsea.
The Tribeca Film Festival isn't strictly limited to film and movies, there is food, music, and lots of other entertainment as the festival is growing bigger and bigger every year! Many local restaurants and lounges supplement the movies.
I read up on some of the spotlighted films such as SPORK, about the awkwardness of adolescence. Several other films will be viewed, see the full list of films and producers here as well as other information. Tickets go on sale tomorrow for American Express card holders, the 18th for downtown residents, and all other tickets go on sale THIS WEEK also! Get yours fast and enjoy!

At it again: Lady Gaga and Beyonce "Telephone"

I don't know how many different phones there are gonna be, but ish just got weird. Lady Gaga returned the favor to Beyonce and let her star in her single "Telephone", with an almost 10 minute movie/music video remix that I've posted below. This might win for strangest pop single EVER... ever, ever, ever! This video includes the most interesting use of studs and caution tape. Crazy costumes and make up once again.. oh my.
Lady Gaga plays one psycho chic in this musical movie with Beyonce as her Bonnie and Clyde lover/best friend? I don't know. But it certainly is entertaining.

Poisoning people just because you don't want to pick up your telephone? Come on now...

Talk Trends: Leopard (Rawrrrr)

I am an unapologetic LEOPARD LOVER. And I feel like leopard is always coming in and out of fashion every 2 or 3 years, but this season, and I think on to fall, leopard is back and better than ever. I especially like how designers are using it this year-- long hair leopard adorning shoes and handbags, paired with neon and jewel tones, and as lining! Leopard shoes are especially in as many celebrities are wearing them- on all occasions- paired with ripped jeans to work dresses.
Check out these looks:

I heart MINX Nails

This amazing God-send of nail technique hit the scene last summer but has been getting great attention ALL year-- it's MINX nails-- a process of a temporarily permanent nail polish application- flexible film applied by heat and pressure. Ladies, this means no more chipped nails and color that lasts for days! Wahoo! They're such low maintenance- you can swim, do the dishes, they are so resilient.
I actually had a friend who got the chance to get the done complimentary last summer (lucky girl!) and hers hands lasted several days, almost weeks, and her feet even longer!!
MInx Nails have been in the limelight because of all of the celebrities that are hopping on the bandwagon. Yes, they do cost more than a manicure but they are available in designs, patterns, great metallic colors, decals, you name it!! Only certain nail salons offer Minx Nails, so search around and find someone near you! Check out these amazingggg Minx designs:

THE Coolest New Website! Polyvore.com

I heard about this amazing new site called Polyvore.com through my internship... it's basically any girl's dream website! Whether you're a fashionista or future editor of a magazine, or just love to get dressed, you will absolutely appreciate this website! How it works is they set you up with a blank canvas on which you can choose your favorite items- tops, belts, jeans, dresses, accessories, you name it- and then you create your own still life, just like the ones you see in your favorite magazines!

It's not an online shopping site, but you ARE able to basically google your favorite designers or pieces and add them in addition to the ones they have provided for you! It's the coolest and you will spend hours creating different looks like I did this Sunday night! You can save your drafts and continue making more until you can't bear to look at the computer screen anymore!
Looks at the looks that I created. (I seriously want ALL of this!)

Ummm, Hello! Beyonce and Lady Gaga's Video Phone Video!

As if this song wasn't ridiculous enough, now Beyonce has teamed up with Lady Gaga in her hit song "Video Phone." The song is pretty sick, but this video speaks for itself. Once again, as in the "Rude Boy" video, the costuming, makeup, and choreography in this video is INSANE. I love that it resembles a cartoon with the bright colors and animated graphics. Most of all, I love that the video as a whole reads as a real movie! GREAT intro to the song with the black and white morphing into color! And my, is she really workin' that braid. Not quite sure if I'll want my future daughter dancing along to this in a few years, but for now its certainly entertaining.
Crazy outfits, crazy dancing, and crazy Lady Gaga. Pretty sick duo, though!

Watch it for yourself here:

GETAWAY with Essie's RESORT Collection!

You guessed it, more nail polish! This time, it's Essie's Resort Collection. These bright colors are much more exotic than the soft spring hues they came out with earlier, and with clever names as always. Although the collection is just 4 shades- just like that 4 day stay in the Caribbean- they are all worth it! Choose from "Lapis of Luxury" a beautiful blue; "Splash of Grenadine" and fresh green; "Playa del Platinum" a nice neutral hue, or "Turquoise and Caicos" my favorite-- teal! Or you can choose all 4! Available in two weeks, May 1st in beauty retailers near you. Yay!

updates....

Ok, I apologize, I still have YET to see Alice in Wonderland! It's been on my list of things to do, hopefully during spring break I can see it! I've been hearing great things about it though, a few friends have seen it and they said it was definitely trippy and a grown up version of the Disney version. SO look out for my thoughts when I finally get to seeing it! If YOU have seen it, let me know what you think!!!

Talk Trends: Neon!

As Spring is finally almost here, it's time to shop for the new season. The hottest trend, quite literally, is NEON right now. Hot pink, neon yellow, orange, green, and electric blue and magenta are all great colors to spice up jeans and white pants. My favorite way to wear neon right now is through accessories. Instead of investing in an expensive dress or top in a neon color, spring for accessories that can put the perfect touch on your outfit and embrace the trend at the same time. Totes, sandals, hair accessories, and jewelry are all great touches! Here are some looks:

The 2010 Oscars Night of Fashion!

America tuned in again to watch the 2010 Oscars last night. There was so much buzz around the show as some of the most amazing and innovative movies were up for nominations- not to mention some of the best actors and actresses. But I'll stray from the politics of the awards show and focus on my favorite looks of the night!

Meryl, Meryl, Meryl... my HOPE is to look as good as she does when I am her age. The all white Chris March gown is simply stunning and not overdone with too many accessories, just some great earrings. She is such a talented and modest actresses and dressed with grace and elegance. Love it!

Cameron Diaz! Hello! While we haven't heard anything from her in a while, Cameron certainly spoke for herself in this dazzling Oscar de la Renta gown. While the dress is beautiful on its own, I think Cameron had the best hair and make up. Looking very "Old Hollywood" with the voluminous cascading soft curls and vibrant red lips she was definitely looking like Hollywood gold!

Zoe Saldana! Certainly looking far from an Avatar and a lot like Givenchy Couture! At fist I wasn't completely sure about this look but I love it in photographs! I love the ombre ruffled bottom and sparkling top, what a dress!

Hmmm.... this is one I wasn't quite sure about. Jennifer Lopez usually always looks like a goddess on the red carpet (although she has really been taking some fashion risks lately) but last night something wasn't quite right. I think it's the material-- looks like bubble wrap or that stuff they package TV's in, although the dress is Armani Prive. The color could have been a little bit brighter, she doesn't need to wash herself out with that dull color. But I love the shape of the dress and the rest of her look, just sad that this didn't come together better.

Hahaha THE funniest look of the Oscars was Ben Stiller when he presented. His whole delivery and speech had me rolling. He is brilliant. And to imagine that he missed the Red Carpet to sit through hours (I'm imagining hours) of hair and makeup to transform himself into an Avatar is just amazing- not that guys like Ben Stiller WANT to walk the Red Carpet but, you know... Anyways, so funny! The tail/braid part was hilarious!

All in all, I think everyone looked really great last night. I haven't seen the official "BEST AND WORST Looks of the 2010 Oscars" in gossip magazines yet so I can't say that for sure. Other notables were Sara Jessica Parker, Miley Cirus (although she has TERRIBLE posture!) Rachel McAdams, Demi Moore, Amanda Siegfried, and Queen Latifah. Overall, amazing dresses! Ahhh, gotta love award show nights that celebrate the runway on the Red Carpet!

Oooooo.... OPI's "Alice in Wonderland" Collection

Four marvelous new colors are out from OPI inspired by Alice in Wonderland! The colors are fun, whimsical, and available for a short time only! Choose from "Off With Her Red!," a vibrant matte red; "Absolutely Alice," a sparkling turquoise; "Mad As a Hatter," a multi-colored glitter medley of purples, greens, blues, and more; and "Thanks So Muchness," a metalic redish pink. Get them while they're still around! Available at most salons and beauty stores, and here at Amazon.com

It's ALL about Alice this week!!

So ever since seeing Avatar I have been super excited about the release of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (I saw the preview while seeing Avatar...twice). I was a pretty big Disney Princess girl when I was young so I never paid much attention to Alice and her crazy antics, but Alice in Wonderland might be my new favorite fantasy. When I finally took the story out of Disney's childish tea-time context and into Lewis Carroll's intended twisted and demented context, I started to pay attention.

So! This week the movie drops in theaters in 3-D which I am sooo excited about! Only Tim Burton would be capable of adapting this film into a creep yet fascinating piece. And talk about an all start cast: Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter ... I can't wait! The special affects, wardrobe, and amazing acting skills are sure to make the movie a work of art!

New York is also anticipating Alice in Wonderland as a lot of restaurants and lounges are having specials in honor of the movie. Get a little inspiration from the Caterpillar and enjoy hookah at Kush on Chrystie Street, or enjoy 2-for-1 cocktails from 5-7pm like champagne and absinthe "White Rabbit" at Sidebar (15th St. at Irving Pl).At Sidebar there will also be chances to win tickets to the movie! But most importantly, scope out where you're going to view the film! I'm anticipating long lines and sold out shows, so get on it. This is totally a grown up Disney movie on shrooms, so go see it!

In the meantime, watch one of the trailers:

Right on the money: Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum

So MoMA has it's claim to fame being free admission on Friday's after 3pm but who knew the Brooklyn Museum offered a full DAY of admission for free every first Saturday of the month! Sooo as it is now March (finally) plan your upcoming weekend and be sure to make room for a visit to BK. This Saturday, March 6th, the Brooklyn Museum is offering a whole day devoted to women: "Viva Woman!" The gallery tour offered is "To Live Forever: Art and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt" (I am a slight nerd and think ancient Egypt is super interesting). There is also "Object of the Month," music, film, and a create your own clay sculpture station that's inspired by great women in history! The Young Voice Gallery Talk is a forum where students can talk about female figures in an installation- someone go represent for Fordham! Last but NOT least, the whole day wraps up with a Dance Party (legit, the museum called it that on their website) so at least be there 9-11pm with DJ Mary Mac for a tribute to the women of hip hop and soul. HOW AMAZING?!

Get ALL the details (hours, transit, admission) HERE at The Brooklyn Museum's website.

My Love/Hate Love Song

Finally a rant!!! OK... anyone who knows me knows that I loooooveeee Alicia Keys... like, I want to be her. In my eyes, she can do no wrong... almost. I have been LOVING her new album THE ELEMENT OF FREEDOM that dropped in December... except for one tiny song, which happens to be her next single, "Put It In a Love Song." For those of you who don't know, this is her awkward (and somewhat obnoxious) duet with Beyonce. I can't pretend to like it and I don't really know where this collabo came from... I feel like Beyonce (the pop diva that she is) and Alicia (the most all around musically talented female artist around) could have just respected each other's creative differences and just NOT gotten together. Rather, they teamed up for a duet, and sadly decided on "Put It In a Love Song." I feel like the song was a reach for Alicia and that she deserves a much better fight against Beyonce, because only a pop singer can pull off that watered-down song that has even weaker lyrics. In complete honesty, I have unchecked the song in my itunes so that the song will not play while I'm listening to the album.

ANYWAYS! I will stop ranting and will admit that the pics from the photo shoot are pretty amazing (a possible contender for Rihanna's "Rude Boy" video), although I feel like the single will get a lot of attention because of the hype around the music video itself (it hasn't premiered yet and I can't find a leak anywhere!). The girls were shooting in CUBA for their duet which garnered a lot of South American press attention! The wardrobe and makeup does look fantastic though, very exotic and fun! Imagine, the two most beautiful women in the business together in a steamy place like Cuba? Yes. Hopefully it does Alicia some justice and will improve my opinion of the song itself. Check out these pics I found from Alicia Keys' Official Website:

And if you find the official music video premiere before me, let a girl know!
